The Onion Layers of a Simpsons Joke

One of my favourite things about The Simpsons is that because i grew up with it, there were a lot of jokes that went over my head, and watching them now i realise there were twice as many jokes as there were before, and in some cases, one line can actually be two jokes at once. A lot of Simpsons jokes have these layers to them, just like an onion. But what I think is probably one of my favourite Simpsons jokes is simply because it has not one layer, not two, but five layers to it. The clip to your right has Homer putting on a pair of glasses he finds, says a bunch of mathematical jargon, and then gets proven wrong. So let's take a look at the layers of this joke. One: The fact that Homer puts on a pair of glasses and is instantly smart. Two: That he still gets it wrong and is still an idiot. Three: that someone actually cares enough to correct Homer in the most blue-collar slob way (Also he's on the toilet). Four: it's a reference to The Wizard of Oz where the Scarecrow says the exact same thing. Five: The Scarecrow also got it wrong, making it a satire.

Those are five jokes all wrapped up into 8 seconds and just 2 lines of dialogue, it's moments like this that prove The Simpsons isn't just great because of nostalgic reasons, but was legitimately an insanely clever show. And if you're one of those hipster douche-nozzles that thinks classic Simpsons is overrated then get off my blog!
