With the release of the trailer for the new 'Minions' I decided to talk about the success of the Despicable Me franchise, and when I say success, I mean monster success, this franchise has exploded with popularity. Despicable Me 2 is currently the 3rd most successful animated film of all time, grossing $970 Million in the box-office and you can't go to any fair, shop, arcade without seeing minion toys, it's a product that has exploded in popularity. And I think the movies are okay...that's it, and you know what? That's all they should have been. They're not fantastic movies, they didn't revolutionise the industry or have any deep meaning to them where it takes their audience seriously, this franchise is popular simply because it's cute. That is it. People fell in love with these films because they're just so damn adorable, the kids are adorable, the animation is adorable and yes, the minions are fucking adorable. Now if you love this movie simply because it's cute, then that's fine, you're perfectly allowed to do that, but the amount of people who i've met who claim they think it's fantastic surprisngly know very little about it and that is what pisses me off, here's an example: I have a t-shirt that is a cross between Futurama and Despicable Me, the Futurama characters look like minions and it says "Gruturama" I thought it was cool, I like Despicable Me and I love Futurama so I bought it. To thi day it's one of my most complimented T-Shirts, of course people love Despicable Me so it gets a lot of attention, but I can't tell you how many times i've heard someone say "Oh I love Despicable Me!!!!...But why does it say Gruturama???" BECAUSE THAT'S THE NAME OF THE MAIN FUCKING CHARACTER YOU IDIOT! How can you claim to love a movie without even knowing the name of the main character!? That's one of those cases where you don't love the movie, you just love the adorableness surrounding the movie rather than the movie itself. If the cuteness is the best part of the film then fine, but you have to at least acknowledge what else is actually happening in the movie! And it gets worse, there are some people i've met who can't tell me the characters names, the story, recall any jokes, in some cases they haven't even seen the fucking movie! Yet they claim they are fans of something they haven't even FUCKING SEEN!!!! But what really pisses me off about this is that the company that makes this franchise Illumination Entertainment are never going to make anything else apart from Despicable Me movies. The only other thing they've made is The Lorax, and that was god awful and no one even remembers it, despite only coming out several years ago (And that movie pretty much was pretty much Despicable Me just with a slightly different coat of paint). You know what they're next two movies are going to be? Minions, and then Despicable Me 3. This is a major problem, a company of dozens and dozens of people who want to make movies are too afraid to try anything different, and instead they're just going to keep beating this franchise for all it's worth. Why do you think the Minions are getting they're own movie? Because that's all people give a damn about, people don't care about the characters or the story, they just want the Minions and nothing else. And how much do you wanna bet that the Minions movie is going to be nothing more than them running around and looking cute and silly while doing it? And how much do you want to bet that everyone is going to see it and everyone is going to love it, even though the story is probably gonna be a piece of garbage and have nothing of value. And once this fad has been drained for all it's worth, Illumanation are just going to try and replicate the success and fail because they're too afraid to try anything new like other companies and are going to hit rock bottom...hehe, bottom.
