Gravity Falls "The Stanchurian Candidate" Review
Holy crap, I can't believe I forgot to review the latest episode of Gravity Falls, oh well, better late than never. In this episode we see Grunkle Stan deciding to run for mayor after the previous mayor died (RIP Mayor Befufftlefumpter, ???-2012). However, things aren't as simple as they seem, as Lil' Ol' Gideon is controlling his father from prison to run for mayor, and should he win, Gideon will be released from prison.
So let's talk about this episode, strating with Gideon, a character that i had mixed feelings about returning. On one hand, he's a very funny character and he was obviously going to return at somepoint, but on the other hand, his story was done with, and i feel like they could have told this episode without his involvement, save him for something where he's actually a necessity to the plot. But regardless he still got some good lines, and clearly they're building up to something big in the future, afterall, this is one of the few end-credit sequences to actually feature build up to the major story arc. It also sets up the return of Bill, and you know i'm down for that, Bill is one of the best villains there is.
Then there is the actual plot of the episode, Stan running for mayor. Now I will say we got a lot of good jokes in this episode, anytime Stan is acting crooked is always hilarious, he's such a big criminal he actually invented a crime "burglebezzlement", so that's the biggest positive to take away from this plot. But apart from that, i didn't think it was all that good of a plotline, mostly for Stan behaving pretty out of character. Yes he's a guy that speaks his mind, but he's not an idiot, he would know the stuff he's saying is just going to hurt his chances at being mayor, also the way how he was a jerk to Dipper and Mabel but then they reunite at the end, i dunno, it felt tacked on and not all that effective, i feel like this is more of a season one plotline, but this far into the show, they'd be past these petty squabbles by now.
Also we lost a great character in the mayor. Yes he may have only had like 3 lines, but each one of those lines was hilarious! Oh well, we got a good replacement with Tad Strange, seriously, please tell me that Tad Strange is going to become a recurring character, he was hilarious for how normal he was, bring back Tad Strange!
Apart from that, I don't really have a whole lot to say about this episode, we had some good jokes and Tad Strange was awesome, but the plot really felt hollow and was backtracking on a lot of character development we've had over the past season. 7/10.
