Truth! Justice! And the American Way! A statement rather contradictory these days as there's nothing truthful or justice in the American legal system, ooh buuurn.
But seriously, Superman is one of-if not the-most iconic superhero in all of history, because of his fair and honest personality, his manners and respect for everyday citizens of the world and that the guy is practically a god. I mean seriously the guy is unbeatable, he can literally do everything. But of course there is always that struggle that audience members have with connecting to him, I mean when he's a figure that overpowers everything who's only weaknesses are magic, a blue sun and a glowing green rock from a blown up planet which all for some reason landed on Earth, it's hard to find him to be that relatable of a character when he really has no real flaws. He is the perfect hero, which in a way, makes him not the perfect hero. People love Spider-Man because he was just an average teenager, people love Green Arrow because he fights for the little people, people love the X-Men because they have to face a prejudice, people love Batman because he shows the best humanity is capable of physically. Superman doesn't have any of these, he is the least relatable A-List superhero out there, which for some people can lead to them either loving or disliking the character.
I personally love Superman and not just because he is the perfect specimen but because of his reasoning behind his perfect specimen. Superman, like a lot of superheroes, has a tragic backstory, his home planet blew up and he ended up on Earth. Now what makes it different is that for most superheroes, this is the MacGuffin that turns them into a hero, Uncle Ben being shot, Parents killed in an Ally, these are the key points that turn the characters into who they are today. But not Superman. Before he even knows he is Superman or Kal-El, Clark Kent, believed himself to be just a human who had amazing gifts, he didn't find out about his home planet until he was already a man. And before that point he has a choice to make, he can use his powers for good or for evil, and obviously, he chose good. Because Clark Kent didn't need a tragic backstory in order to become a hero, he was already destined to be who he is today.
If Uncle Ben never got shot, Peter Parker would never have become Spider-Man, if Bruce Wayne's parents never died then he never would have been Batman. But if Clark Kent had never found out about Krypton then he still would have become Superman, he was always going to be this great man who always fought to protect as many people as he could, he would do whatever he could, because he can. He's the ultimate hero because he knows that the key to being a true hero isn't by how many people you can save, but the reasoning behind why you're saving them. And that is why Superman is one of the best superheroes in history (that and the heat vision, that shit rocks!).
And now, the John Williams Superman theme!
